          Lesson 29

          Teaching Aims:

          Help the students to understand and use correctly the verb " offer "

          Teaching Methods:

          1. Free talk / question - and - answer activity to help the students to go over the learned materials.

          2. Pair work / group work to make every student work in class.

          Teaching Aids:

          1. a tape recorder .2. a slide projector. 3. some pictures

          Teaching Procedures:

          Step I. Greeting

          Greet the whole class as usual

          Step II. Revision

          (Write these columns on the Bb: Vegetables / Meat / Fruit / Drinks / Other kind of food. Let the Ss work in groups, They have to write down the names of as many items of food as they can think of in English, See which group can think of the most items for each category.)

          T: First, let' s have a competition. I' ll divide you into five groups. Each group has to write down the names of as many items of food as you can think of in English. I' ll see which group can think of the most items for your category. OK.

          S: Yes.

          T: Now, you can have a discussion. Then each group will choose a student to write on the blackboard.

          (After some minutes, teacher says the following.)

          T: OK. Look at the Bb, Which group wins? S: Group 2.

          Step III. Presentation

          (Teach the names of food in the new language items, using some pictures.)

          T: Look at the picture. It' s a bowl of soup, Pay attention to its pronunciation [su: p]. Read after me, please, what do you usually have after you have some noodles / steamed bread?

          Ss: Some soup.

          (Teach the new words " coffee, cream, ice cream, beancurd, pancake " in the same way, after that, teacher asks Ss to open their books and read the dialogue silently. After a while, teacher may let Ss answer one question.)

          T: How many kinds of food do the friends talk about in the dialogue?

          S: Beancurd, beef, chicken pancake, soup,

          Step IV. Dialogue.

          1. Speech cassette, Lesson 29. Play the tape of the dialogue for the Ss to listen. Then play it again for the Ss to listen and repeat.

          2. Go through the dialogue and explain any language point’s show on the screen.

          1. Revise the difference between " Do you like ---?

          (In general) and " Would you like ---? (= Do you want --- now?

          2. How about some more beef? There is no main verb here; This is acceptable in speech but not usually in written English. In this sentence, " What " can be used instead of " how “.

          3. There is plenty more. = There is plenty more beef.

          4. Next time you must come to us, = We will invite you to have supper at our house next time

          5. What a delicious supper! There is an indefinite article before " supper " when there is an adjective before it.

          3. Let the Ss practise the dialogue in pairs. Then ask some pairs to act it out.

          Step V. Language Study

          (SB. Lesson 29. Part 2. Go through the first column of words with the Ss and check if they understand the meaning.)

          T: These are measure words on the left. There are a lot of measure words such as. 一碗湯, 一瓶啤酒等 。 In English we use " of " a piece / cup / bow / glass --- " Are you clear?

          Ss: Yes.

          T: Now let' s do this exercise together. (Get the Ss to use a correct phrase for each food. Finally show the following on the screen.)

          Step VI. Oral Practice

          (SB, Lesson 29 Part 3. Go through the phrases and make sure the Ss understand them. Explain the use of the verb " offer " and the phrases " take turns "" help oneself to " to the Ss, Show them on the screen.)

          1. offer vt. -------- say what one is willing to give. ( 主) 提供 提出)It is often followed by a noun or compound objects

          e.g. They were friendly and even offered help.

          The government offered him a choice of jobs.

          2. Help oneself to sth. = Please take … for oneself

          e.g. Help yourself to some fish / chicken …

          3. take turns

          e.g. They take turns to clean the classroom.

          (Do one example with a student. Then let the Ss work in pairs.)

          T: Would you like some tea?

          S: Yes, please.

          (Ask some pairs of Ss to act out their dialogues.)

          A: How about a cup of coffee?

          B: Just a little.

          A: Let me give you some more fish.

          B: No, thanks, I' ve had enough.

          A: Help yourself to some chicken.

          B: I' m full, thank you.

          Step VII. Sum up

          Help the students to sum up what they have learned in this class, especially the important and difficult language points.

          Step VIII. Homework Assignrnent:

          T: Do Ex. 2 in your workbooks on Page 92.
