　　Customer: The lady who is standing behind the counter.

　　顧客：站在柜臺(tái)后面的那位女士。

　　Manager: Which books did you buy?

　　經(jīng)理：您買(mǎi)的是兩本什么書(shū)？

　　Customer: The books which are on the counter.

　　顧客：就是柜臺(tái)上的那兩本。

　　Manager: Did you serve this gentleman half an hour ago, Caroline?He says he’s the man who bought these books.

　　經(jīng)理：卡羅琳，半小時(shí)前你接待過(guò)這位先生嗎？他說(shuō)他就是買(mǎi)這兩本書(shū)的人。

　　Caroline: I can’t remember, sir. The man whom I served was wearing a hat.

　　Manager: Have you got a hat, sir?

　　這是一個(gè)省略句，完整的句子是“The lady who is standing behind the counter served me.”其中who is standing behind the counter是一個(gè)以關(guān)系代詞who引導(dǎo)的定語(yǔ)從句，用來(lái)修飾前面的名詞the lady。

　　本課帶有定語(yǔ)從句的復(fù)合句還有:The books which are on the counter; He says he's the man who bought these books: The man who I served was wearing a hat; Is this the man that you served等,其中which, who,whom, that均為關(guān)系代詞。

　　3 The man who I served was wearing a hat.

　　這是另一個(gè)定語(yǔ)從句的例子。由于被修飾的名詞the man在定語(yǔ)從句中是動(dòng)詞served的賓語(yǔ)，因此，關(guān)系代詞應(yīng)該用賓格whom，但在口語(yǔ)中往往用主格who。

　　2．put it on,戴上它。

　　這里的it指a hat，以避免重復(fù)。 put on是“戴上”、“穿上”的意思。如果它的賓語(yǔ)是一個(gè)名詞，這個(gè)名詞可放在put on之后，也可放在put和on之間。如果是代詞，就必須放在put和on之間。如：

　　Put on your coat./ Put your coat on.

　　穿上外衣。

　　但只能說(shuō)：

　　Put it on.

　　把它穿上。

　　語(yǔ)法Grammar in use

　　定語(yǔ)從句

　　定語(yǔ)從句像形容詞一樣起修飾作用，但位于所修飾的名詞之后。定語(yǔ)從句由關(guān)系代詞引導(dǎo)，緊跟在它所修飾的成分后面。關(guān)系代詞who，whom與that修飾人，which與that修飾東西。關(guān)系代詞指代從句的主語(yǔ)或賓語(yǔ)，同時(shí)又充當(dāng)連接詞，把從句和主句連接起來(lái)。請(qǐng)看例句：

　　（1）關(guān)系代詞作從句的主語(yǔ)（who/which/that）：

　　The dog which/that is carrying the basket is mine.

　　叼著籃子的那只狗是我的。

　　He's the porter who/that carried my suitcase.

　　他就是那個(gè)扛著我的衣箱的搬運(yùn)工。

　　（2）關(guān)系代詞作從句的賓語(yǔ)（whom/that/which）：

　　They're the windows which/that the children broke yesterday.

　　這些就是孩子們昨天打碎的窗戶。

　　She's the lady whom I served yesterday.

　　她就是我昨天服務(wù)過(guò)的那位女士。
