1、圣誕老人為奧丁神后裔。也傳說稱圣誕老人由圣·尼古拉而來，所以圣誕老人也稱St.Nicholas。據說他原是小亞細亞每拉城的主教，名叫圣尼古拉，死后被尊為圣徒，是一位身穿紅袍、頭戴紅帽的白胡子老頭。每年圣誕節他駕著鹿拉的雪橇從北方而來，由煙囪進入各家，把圣誕禮物裝在襪子里掛在孩子們的床頭上或火爐前。所以，西方人過圣誕節時，父母把給孩子的圣誕禮物裝在襪子里，圣誕夜時掛在孩子們的床頭上。第二天，孩子們醒來后的`第一件事就是在床頭上尋找圣誕老人送來的禮物。
2、傳說有個心地善良的沒落貴族，生活非常艱難。三個女兒快要出嫁了，他為沒有錢給她們買嫁妝而難過。喜慶的圣誕夜，三個姑娘早早地蜷在炕上睡覺了，剩下父親在長吁短嘆。圣誕老人決定幫助他們。他在他們家的煙囪里撒下了許多金子，落進姑娘們烤在火爐旁的長統絲襪里。從此，他們過上了幸福而快樂的生活……圣誕節的襪子就這樣產生。
3、另一個傳說記載。據說有一位農民在一個風雪交加的圣誕夜里接待了一個饑寒交迫的小孩，讓他吃了一頓豐盛的圣誕晚餐，這個孩子告別時折了一根杉樹枝插在地上并祝福說：“年年此日，禮物滿枝，留此美麗的杉村，報答你的好意。”小孩走后，農民發現那樹枝竟變成了一棵小樹，他才明白自己接待的原來是一位上帝的使者。這個故事就成為圣誕樹的來源。在西方，不論是否基督徒，過圣誕節時都要準備一棵圣誕樹，以增加節日的歡樂氣氛。圣誕樹一般是用杉柏之類的常綠樹做成，象征生命長存。樹上裝飾著各種燈燭、彩花、玩具、星星，掛上各種圣誕禮物。圣誕之夜，人們圍著圣誕樹唱歌跳舞，盡情歡樂。
